The employees of Dee-Luxe Car Wash in Los Angeles are just trying to get through another workday. Whether it's fending off skater punks, practicing for an audition, or trying to land a date, the diverse ensemble of Michael Schultz’s effervescent Car Wash approaches its buffing and drying with the youthful energy of an endless summer.
Stacked with Black comedy and cinema luminaries Franklyn Ajaye, Bill Duke, Ivan Dixon, Antonio Fargas, Garrett Morris, and Richard Pryor, and supported by George Carlin, Irwin Corey, and Melanie Mayron, this who’s-who of 1970s independent and underground cinema makes for a joyous slice of life. Underscored by the funky tunes of Rose Royce and complemented by a cameo by the Pointer Sisters, Schultz’s classic is a witty, primarily light-hearted offering from an otherwise tumultuous decade. - The Academy Museum
